This is a free-verse poem written after my ex-boyfriend broke up with me.
A Slit Wrist Apology

Turn over my cold, death-kissed arm.
See the deep, red wound?
It's my sincere apology to you.
Hold it close to your heart
as the romance bleeds away,
my red life slowly seeping
from my veins.

A perfect example of cause and effect:
I give you my heart
wrapped neatly in my soul;
you give it back with pieces missing.
I'm on my knees begging you to forgive me
for giving you my undying love.

Now take a look behind my back.
See the blood-stained knife?
I found it driven through my heart.
Don't you remember that night?
I remember as if it were yesterday.
You held your words high above my head,
and with all your power,
drove them straight through my heart.

Do you feel any pain?
How about regret or longing?
Or does that empty hole
where your heart should be,
contain any emotion?

Now, the knife that broke
my heart, slices through my wrist.
Feel my warm blood,
my apologies to you.
