A Soldier's Letter

I have something to tell you all,
But please don't shed a tear.
I'm afraid I won't be seeing you
At Christmas time this year.



I've tried my best to get back home,
But someone had to stay.
It's my duty to our country,
Though I want to leave today.



It's not my only duty;
I'm a father and a son.
But I'm not the only one who's staying
To finish what's begun.



There are others who have family, too,
That aren't going home this year.
I hope this letter brings you hope
And takes away your fear.



So place my present under the tree,
That may not make sense, it seems.
Cause I'll be home for Christmas,
If only in my dreams.
