For Baby Sister in Alaska/Military. |
Christmas time in 1966 I had to go away Rough times at home, I could not stay Visited on rare occasions when the coast was clear Those times when dad was gone I had nothing to fear I snuck in a visit after you were born Staring down at the tiny bundle I was torn Wisps of blonde hair and bright blue eyes Looking at you, holding you, I felt the ties. Dear little sister some of your youth I had missed I think of the visits and my cheek you had kissed You were cute as a button and I would fix up your hair I would twist each curl and pin it with flair All tuckered out on your “blankie” you would rest You’d wrap yourself up in a cozy little nest Sucking two fingers with your “blankie” held tight Knowing you were tired but sleep you would fight One hand clutching little tufts worn and raveled Up and down your face, arms and legs it traveled If someone sat next to you they were granted the same We would fight for the seat; to us it was a game Together for always even when apart Held close and near in each other’s heart Miles may separate us but our minds still touch I reach out and hold you, as I love you so much I am your big sister but I am also your friend Our love for each other will never end I am bursting with pride as I look at you today It is not just the military that made you this way Morals, decency, manners, unselfishness and pride Reflects off each other whose lives have been tied Bound together by blood and a love so strong Each of us knowing this is where we belong To wake up is to be blessed with another glorious day We cherish that thought and give thanks when we pray Blessed with a bounty of love for one another Within and without we owe it all to our mother! She instilled in us many wonderful traits. Thanks to the lord and lady in charge of our fates These are the memories that I will always treasure Looking at old photos gives me so much pleasure When you’re miles away I keep you close to my heart In our large family puzzle you are a very special part Me and you and you and me Together thru all eternity! |
