Jared is your good guy. Then he met her, and fell in love . Will things turn out ok? |
The air was brisk and the trees swayed gently in the crisp, fall breeze. The trees looked naked and scary without there leaves, as if the hands of skeletons reaching up from the grave. The sun was beginning to set as I drove down that desolate road. Construction equipment dotted the sides of the road and it appeared that they were trying to add two lanes onto it. “Why would you waste money adding lanes to this deserted road that leads to the middle of nowhere? Or better yet, why am I actually going to check this place out,” I thought to myself. While the answer to the first question was still to be determined the second wasn’t as hard. I like to swim, I have done it most of my life. I like the rush you get before races and the thrill of competition. Of course there was a swim team in my home town, but I had already been there and done that. I didn’t like the team, the coach, or anything about it for that matter. I begged my parents to let me find another team for the upcoming winter league. High school league had been fun and my coach proposed that I come swim for a team he was trying to get off the ground in the nearby town of Lester. I heard things about Lester, that the people were a tad bit country and that Elvis was still king down there but, I decided to give the team a chance. Maybe I would finally find my place, my home and better yet, maybe I would meet the girl of my dreams. I glanced at the rear view mirror to make sure no one was riding my bumper. I couldn’t help but think to myself why I was the one who was single when I tried my best to be the nice guy. I wasn’t that bad look, I stood about 5’7’’, brown eyes, brown hair, I wasn’t exactly skinny, but far from fat either. I had been in relationships before but, they never seemed to work out and I am still looking for the right person. As I neared the town I came to an intersection and had to stop for the red light. I quickly glanced at the directions and hurriedly put on my left signal. As I was sitting there I suddenly heard country music coming from somewhere. I looked in the rear view mirror to see a white pick-up truck behind me with two kids sitting in the front seats. They looked about my age, no older than 17. I glanced at them before noticing the light had turned green so I turned left and headed down the road. “ Maybe what everybody said was true,” I said to myself. I passed a Pizza Hut, a McDonalds, and a Wal-mart before I came into view of the complex. It wasn’t very impressive, looked a lot like an old school. The indoor had been recently added and it was pretty impressive by itself. I quickly pulled into a parking space and grabbed my bag before getting out of the car. The wind had picked up so I jogged to the front doors and entered quickly. I looked around to see a trophy case on my right and a reception desk on the left. There was an elderly women sitting at the desk and when she saw me she smiled and asked “Can I help you young man?”. “ Yes mama, I was thinking of joining the swim team down here and I was wondering if you had any information about it.” I responded. “ Well, yes I do. I have a sign up form right here that I can give you. Come to think of it though, they are having practice right now, Why don’t I just take you to the pool so you can see the team for yourself.” she offered. I thought about it for a second and replied, “ That would be great mama, if it isn’t to much trouble for you.” “ No trouble at all,” she said as she handed me a white sheet of paper. I took the sign-up form and let her lead the way into the gym. The gym appeared to be very old and it wasn’t very large at all. She quickly led me to the right corner where a large sign hung over the open doorway that read “Girls locker room”. “ Don’t mind that sign young man, we remodeled and haven’t bothered to take it down yet,” she said. I breathed a sign of relief and followed her down the twisting corridor. Finally, a door came into view with another sign above it reading “Entrance to Pool Deck: no running”. She opened the door and greeted by the choking smell of chlorine. |
