A nationwide call for memories - |
ANSWERING THE CALL A nationwide call for memories Took me quite by surprise; It seems they needed someone Who could see the need arise. Not quite sure of how or what to do, I gamely took the nomination - For it was a call to meet and record The memories of our nation! "Go out and find the veterans, We need to find them while we can; For this history is fast dying, And we've got just the plan!" The Library of Congress and The American Folklife Center too, Wants us all to find a veteran And record an interview. For future generations, Their stories must be told - Not everyone will be around; Some are getting pretty old. So if you want to join the cause And start answering the call; Just drop a line to me for I'll be standing near the Wall. With head bowed and teardrops Oh, yes, many will remember - This is your chance to volunteer What a great way to end December! The veterans of World War I And the veterans of World War II, All the other wars they fought To defend our country - and you! Stand up for your country - Show your spirit and your pride! For there will be a veteran Who will tell you of his side. Some stories may be tragic, As war is oftimes hell.. But we need to save these memories; These stories we must tell. Not often does our country call For us to make a contribution To the history of our land Make this a New Year's resolution! As for me, I just go out there And do the best I can - I am answering the call And following the plan. The Veterans History Project Is something mighty fine; And you can see and hear it all You just have to go - online! www.loc.gov/folklife/vets Countrymom 12/20/02 |
