Flash Fiction

The Find

“Stop!” Jean whispered as she grabbed Daron’s sleeve.

“Stop what? Do you see him?”

“No. Everyone is looking at us.”

“So?”

“So do you want everybody looking for Repp?”

“Oh, yea… we should pretend we’re just walking… it could be very dangerous for Repp! Why did you bring him to the park in the first place?”

“Well, I had a collar and a leash on him! I knew people would look and maybe ask about him. But nobody would be nervous because I had him on leash. Our backyard is so small, he’s seen it a thousand times, I wanted to make him happy!”

“What happened?”

“He was so excited being here, he popped his head right out of his collar trying to get to a tree! I ran after him but he moves so fast. That’s when I called you to bring food. I know he’ll come for food; we just have to find him…”

“OK, how?”

“As soon as we see him, I’m going to make the noise I always make when his food is ready, he usually runs to it.”

“Ok, well, how do we find him?”

“He’ll stay on the paths till he sees something interesting, so we walk the path. Keep your eyes open!”

Suddenly they heard a scream. They looked at each other then both bolting toward the yell.

“Up the tree! Up the tree!” Yelled a woman, holding her kids back.

“I’ll get it!” Daron said loudly. He ran over to the tree and climbed up. Then he scooped Repp up and carried him down.

All the other people around clapped and cheered, as they backed up quickly and left the area.

Daron chuckled. “They think I’m crazy!”

“Well, you kind of are… the skunk you’re holding is not my Repp!”
