Saturday Morning

As I walked into the kitchen, I saw a fly fly by. Granted, I have flies on occasion, but it was winter… It’s quite rare to see any flying things in the house at all during a Massachusetts winter. As I walked over to check this bold little critter out, I found it was not alone.

There, walking all over my basket of fruit, were two more flies. Three flies in my winter kitchen! In February!

The fruit was safe, oranges mostly and an orange has to be peeled. One banana, also needing pealing. Two apples, which at the moment didn’t seem to be attractive to the flies. Plus, I thought, I can rinse them off easily. The oddness of my thinking about fly footprints made me laugh out loud.

My laugh apparently caught the flies off guard. All three bolted, and flew off so fast I didn’t even see where they went! I did search for a while, but apparently a giant my size was better hidden from, no luck. So, I just washed the apples, then put all the fruit in the fridge.

Guilt was unexpected. I don’t remember ever feeling guilty swatting flies away in summer! But knowing these three were here, and I just eliminated their, probably only, source of food… I started imagining them like the people in spacecrafts, testing, trying out existing in space.

Well, the space thought stuck. And if these three flies were putting themselves in danger to benefit their species, I was certainly not going to ruin it for them! I took the apples back out!

As I left the kitchen I looked back. They were still hidden but there was hope now that their mission might be successful!

Now I’m thinking, maybe I shouldn’t stay up watching movies so late…
