Explore the ethical implications of AI in various industries
The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence:
AI is set to disrupt the job market. Creating many opportunities but also killing many jobs. One example are self-driving cars. Taxi-drivers fear they will have no job and means to provide for their family because of this new technology. Development of AI tools in such raises important philosophical, ethical questions:
Will there still be jobs after AI takes over the world? And if AI kills job then how will workers be able to make a living and provide for their family?
One possible solution is to imagine a society that benefits everyone. The profits made from AI was partly used to compensate workers that have been laid-off. In that Utopian society the government would be in charge of redistributing wealth to all people. In reality this society will never happen as AI is mostly developed in capatlist country who reward hard-work and innovation. Local government might still consider using taxes to compensate workers who have been laid off, but these benefits would be minimal and not for society as a whole. That's ethical in the capitalist point of view.
Another industry that will greatly be impacted by AI is the farming industry. Smart sensors and intelligent machines will remove the need for human intervention in order to save money. Workers will be replaced altogether and in this will unlikely receive any compensation. Cashiers will also disappear as smart machines can scan food items and add up the total amount of groceries bought. Cashiers will also unlikely receive any compensation and will most likely be asked to find another job.
This undoubtedly poses the ethical question of the value of human life. Should we value machines more than human life? Should we choose profit over people? These debates go back back to the Second Industrial Revolution and the Invention of the Steam engine. Back then, the entrepreneurs received all the benefits while workers lived with minimum wage.
The entrepreneurs back then had no morality issue as they considered the money they earned as a reward from God for their hard work and for taking risks. This capitalist mindset still exists today in the 21st century and is unlikely to change.
Healthcare will also be impacted by AI. What makes it more strange is that here AI will replace surgeons, which are commonly called "knowledge workers." We think of more factory workers being replaced by AI rather than doctors. Some surgeons will still need to supervise the AI, but staff will be considerably reduced. In this case, jobs will probably be allocated.
There is still some human resistance to replacing workers with AI. It seems people are considering the ethical implications previously mentioned. Yet for capitalism, this is a minor setback. Human resistance isn't strong enough against AI. How much workers should be impacted is a matter for policy makers to take. The clear ethical implications of this trend mean they should consider compensation for workers and be clear on their policies that they make.
