“It’s so romantic going for a rowboat ride with you,” Hettie Dalliard sighed, as she dangled one hand over the side into the water.

Carl Berg was puffing a little by now. He made a mighty sweep with the oars, then shipped them. He stared lovingly at his girl.

“I’m glad you are enjoying it, my love,” he said tenderly after he’d caught his breath.

“Ow! Something bit me!” squeaked Hettie.

She pulled her hand out of the water. A fish was hanging off her middle finger.

“Wow, a splake, and it’s a big one!” Carl shouted. He stood up abruptly to help Hettie land her catch.

As he lunged toward her, the boat began to rock dangerously. Hettie screamed as her catch flew off her hand and back into the water. At the same time, there was a loud crunch.

“We’re aground! We’ll drown!” Hettie shrieked piercingly. Manfully, Carl picked up his girl and stepped onto a rock, then onto land.

“Well, we won’t get back in this thing!” Carl said as he examined the shattered bow.

“Carl, hold me, I’m so afraid!” Hettie said, shivering.

So, he did. They awoke to hear a small motorboat hailing them from the water.

“Ahoy, folks! Do you need help?” asked an older man wearing a bucket hat full of lures.

“Yes, please!” said Hettie before Carl could refuse.

“Here you go, buddy,” Carl said as he threw Hettie’s catch wrapped in a scarf to the man.

“What beauty! Already cleaned too.”

“Just a little thanks for the rescue,” Carl told him. They were back at the dock in no time. After paying for the boat, Hettie and Carl walked arm in arm back to their car.

“Let’s do it again sometime,” Hettie said as they drove off speedily.
