Grampa Smiled

“I guess Mom’s not home yet. We can get something to eat.”

“Great,” said Stan.

“Good, I’m hungry too. I usually have peanut butter, or, a cheese sandwich?”

In the kitchen, on the counter was a chocolate cake. Alex’s mother must have made it that morning.

“I want that!” Stan yelled, walking over to it, as if it was a treasure!

“We can’t have that!” Alex said, “Mom must have made it this morning for some reason…”

“So you could have cake when you got home from school!”

“I know what you are thinking,” Alex said. “But Mom doesn’t make cake often. It must be for something important. If we touch it, I’m pretty sure we’ll be in trouble.”

“It smells so good!” Stan said, apparently hypnotized as he walked closer. “My mom tried to make a cake once but it burned up. Do you think it’s chocolate?”

“I don’t know…”

“It doesn’t matter. It’s perfect.”

“We can’t eat the cake!” Alex said, louder. “She probably made it for someone else!”

“Can I buy it? I’d buy that cake and she can make another one!”

Just then Mom walked in. “You’re trying to buy my cake?”

“It’s beautiful! I wanted a piece, but if you sold it to me, I could wait till tomorrow, it’s my mother’s birthday.

“You’d buy this cake?”

“Absolutely! It smells wonderful! I’ll give you twenty bucks for it!”

And that’s how “Sally’s Cakes” started. She was discovered by a high school junior, who hadn’t even tasted it. The company is worth millions now.

“You made that up, didn’t you?”

“A little… Your grandmother made amazing cakes, just like you do. You should try selling them…”

“And call it Sally’s Cakes?”

“Well, she taught you, didn’t she?”

“I love you Gramp. I’ll try!”

Grampa smiled.
