Road Trip Is A Washout

“Mick are you sure we’re going the right way?” asked Aline.

“The GPS says we are,” her husband replied absently.

“The winter landscape is lovely,” his wife commented as they drove.

“I have to watch the road dear, or we’ll never get there!”

“Is that water up ahead?” Aline said urgently.

“Oh no! It is! How did we go from smooth snow to a foot of the wet stuff?” Mick asked as if he expected her to know.

Aline peered forward.

“I can see some kind of sign further ahead.”

“I’m pulling over before my brake pads get wet and stop working,” Mick informed her.

After he did, his wife got out of the car and walked up the soft shoulder to see what was up. She was back quickly and trying to stifle her laughter.

“What’s it say?” Mick asked.

“Road closed due to flooding,” she finally managed to tell him.

For a moment, it looked like he was about to blow his top. Finally, as if catching the absurdity of it, he started to grin. Before long, the couple were clutching each other while they laughed helplessly.

“I think I can get out of here if I stick to the shallowest edge,” Mick said when he finally stopped.

“So much for going to the tree farm to get our Christmas tree!” Aline said.

“You can get us a small artificial one for the corner, just this once,” Mick told her as he began to inch backward back up the road.

“Actually, I saw some real ones in pots at the grocery store. We can grow it inside until spring, then plant it on the property after the ground thaws,” his wife suggested.

“Excellent,” her husband breathed thankfully as he reached the dry road.
