Christmas Shopping Thwarted “Whose idea was this?” Doris asked as she got out of her car and immediately felt her stylish boots fill with snow. “I think we agreed together to go gift shopping today,” Freda told her as she stepped out of the front passenger seat into blowing snow that tried to take her breath away at intervals. Ida stared through the window of the back seat and refused to leave the car. “Let’s go, Ida! All hands on deck! I’ve a shovel with your name on it!” Doris said bracingly. Reluctantly, she got out. She had a scarf tied over her hat and sensible snow boots on. Doris handed her a folding trench shovel. Then she handed traction mats that go under the back wheels to Freda. “Let me know when she’s ready and I’ll gun the engine,” she reminded her friends. After a few minutes, a faint shout came to Doris’ ears. She gunned the engine spitting dirty snow and water out of the back of the car. “Yahoo, we’re out of the ditch! On to the mall!” she shouted out the opening at the top of her window. Freda got into the front seat, shivering and wet. Doris eyed her as she sat on the car’s front passenger seat. “Ida, hand me the blanket on your seat. Doris is a little damp.” “I’m already using it! I’m soaked!” was the reply. “Okay, I agree this was not the best choice of a day to hit the stores?” The other two nodded glumly. “Let’s go back to my place for lunch. Shopping online is safer today. There’s always Rakuten!” Doris concluded with a grin as she headed through the still falling snow and wind to her cozy home. The collective sigh from her two BFFs was heartfelt. |
