Two friends discuss their recent vacation. Writer's Cramp Entry 675 Words.
Pearls and Lace

"So, what do you want to do today? I am tired of just sitting around and being bored. I want some excitement and adventure. I want to live what I read about in those adventure books."

"You got to be kidding me. We have enough excitement to fill a library of books. The other day, I found a dollar in my sock drawer. I don't even remember putting it in there. Made my day."

"First of all, Lace, you went through my sock drawer again and took my dollar. It would help if you stopped taking my socks and losing one of them. Secondly, I want my dollar back."

"Pearls, Pearls, Pearls-let's not quibble over semantics. Your drawer, my drawer. The main thing is I found the dollar and spent it."

Knowing the discussion would only spiral downward, Pearls changed the subject. "Regardless, what should we do today? It's our last vacation day: we wasted most of it at your parents' house three states away."

"How can you call attending my grandmother's quilting party a waste? The conversations alone made it a three-day party." Questioned Lace.

"For starters, neither you nor I knew anything about sewing. You couldn't even thread the needle unless your grandmother did it for you. And what about those two-legged wooden stools we had to sit on and balance ourselves? I still need to sit on a pillow because my backside is sore. Also, and not the least important, half of those ladies chewed tobacco and kept passing around the spit can. And you spilled it on my foot. Those stains will never come out."

"Don't knock the spit can. I picked it out." Lace hurtfully stated.

"You dumped my soda out to use it! You couldn't even wait for me to drink it." Explained Pearls exacerbated.

"Well, it wasn't a diet soda, so you shouldn't have been drinking it. I save you from drinking calories. You should have thanked me."

"That's another thing. Telling everyone there that I needed to lose weight because I couldn't balance myself with that stool. I weigh less than you."

"I didn't have any trouble sitting on my stool. In fact, I found it quite comfortable."

Pearls opened her mouth to say something, then took a slow breath and exhaled, changing the subject. "I know you have told me this before, but tell me again because I forgot; whose quilt were we making?"

"Well, remember the lady sitting two chairs from my grandmother on her right? The one with an eye patch? Well, it was the woman sitting across the quilt from her."

Wondering why Lace needed to explain the location as she did, "You mean the woman sitting next to me? Right next to me?"

"I suppose you could look at it that way. Anyway, it is for her daughter's son's wedding."

"I see. Now I remember why I forgot."

"See, this is why you shouldn't drink soda. It dulls your thinking and dulls your smile."

In a louder voice than intended, "Those ladies were chewing tobacco. Did you see their teeth? One of them didn't even have teeth-she gummed her tobacco."

Lace continued, "Oh, that was Mercy. She is quite the storyteller when she drinks. Mercy got tipsy, and when she laughed at a joke, she sprayed tobacco juice all over the quilt."

Rubbing her hand through her hair in frustration, she said, "That happened while we were there."

"She's done that a couple of times. The joke wasn't funny this time, and she only did it halfway across the quilt."

"Thanks. I am now visualizing the juice being sprayed over the quilt, followed by the cackle of everyone laughing."

"It was funny. They'll be talking about that at the next quilting party."

"Lace, can I ask you a very serious question?"

          "Of course, Pearls. What?"

"Is there anyone at all who is normal?"

"That's funny you should ask that."

          "Why is that Lace?"

"Well, my mom asked if I had any normal friends."
