Home Again

“Excuse me, came a voice from behind me. I was taking my unwanted, but required daily walk in the town park. I spun around quickly; us old people have to be very careful.

The woman behind me was a surprise. While her voice was feminine, I had expected something other than the old human now standing in front of me. I am old myself after all, this woman was ancient! She was about two inches shorter than me, what was left of her hair was snow white, and there were many spots on her head with no hair at all! She was tiny, and skinny, plus, she had more wrinkles than I had ever seen on a living person; and I have gotten very observant regarding wrinkles over the last few years.

I went immediately into helper mode. 'Are you all right, Honey? Have we met before?'

'Oh, that’s so sweet,' she said, smiling at me, 'but I really don’t need your help.'

'Oh,' I said, looking around, though there was actually nobody else close by. 'I thought you were talking to me.'

'I was,' she said sweetly. 'Please give me all your money.'

I actually laughed, but then she pulled out a gun from under her coat.”

“And then what happened?” asked the policeman.

“I gave her my wallet! She, rushed off telling me not to move or her accomplice would shoot me!”

“And that’s why you’re standing here?”

“Darn right! I didn’t want to get shot!”

“And your other wallet?”

“I always carry two, just in case…”

“How about I drive you home?”

“That would be lovely… Have we met before? You look very familiar…”

“I think I know your son, Alex”, the policeman said.

“Oh, how lovely.”

And then Alex drove his mother home, again.
