Flash Fiction
Win, Win!

Ember was bored. He’d done his normal things, it was still light out, too early to sleep. Plus, he’d taken several naps throughout the day, as is completely normal for a cat.

The family seemed to be more active today than usual. As much as he tried to get in their way for cuddles, they were busy, busy. Ember was glad he wasn’t human, too busy!

Walking over to the giant orange ball he tried again to roll it away, but it wouldn’t budge. The last orange ball they had was fun,‘basketball’ they called it. This one’s name was pumpkin, pretty boring, he thought.…

As the evening progressed, the kids suddenly left the house in silly clothes. Ember was surprised. The kids usually get yelled at if they’re wearing silly clothes, or uncombed hair, or something. Tonight, the grown-ups didn’t seem to care what they looked like.

But the next thing that happened was even sillier! Other people’s kids came to the door in more silly clothes and the grown-ups laughed. They even gave them food! This was turning out to be an extremely silly night!

As Ember sat at the edge of the living room, watching this confusing situation, the doorbell rang again. Mum and Dad both got up this time and opened the door.

“Trick or Treat!” yelled the biggest spider Ember had ever seen! Ember knew a few things about spiders! One, they bite! Suddenly feeling very protective of Mum and Dad, Ember bolted toward the spider!

Dad grabbed him, shutting the door before the spider could attack! Saved! Then Dad carried him to the den, and gave him a hug before shutting the den door with him inside. Ember had saved Mom and Dad! And, now it was time for bed!

Win, win!
