Reasons to plant flowers in your garden. |
You may think to yourself, why would I want flowers in my vegetable garden? After all, flower plants take up precious vegetable spaces. What you may not know however is that having flowers amongst your vegetables actually increases your yield! Yes, you read that correctly, you will almost have a guarantee of having more produce. You see, flowers attract beneficial insects like bees. Bees love the color and smell! And with bees, pollination is virtually guaranteed. The bees will go from flower to flower and between your vegetables. Sticking to them are pollen grains, which are used to fertilize the vegetable’s flowers and make them fruit. Another benefit of having flowers in your garden is that it will stifle the growth of weeds. Weeds take away valuable nutrients from your vegetable plants and can be harmful to your precious vegetables. Speaking of harmful, flowers can also lure dangerous insects away from your fragile vegetables. Some of these pests may not only eat the leaves of your vegetables but can destroy your whole plant. No one wants to see their hard work wither away before their eyes. Furthermore, some flowers are also beneficial herbs. They can be used to make teas and soothing rubs. One great example of this is Lavender. Some people leave it to dry and use it as a perfume or maybe if you are creative, add it in soaps or even candles. Even in death, flowers just keep on giving! When the flowers die, they fall to the ground and decompose. This process releases valuable nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen back into the ground for your vegetables to use and create big, luscious fruits. Lastly, one glaring use of flowers in your garden is to add beautiful scenery and enhance the look of the landscape. |
