The fear of stepping out
2/6/96

Looking out of a dark room
Through a doorway edged in gold ...
My inner child trembling
With a deep, suffocating fear.
Inexplicable,
Profound.
I sit, cross-legged, in a corner …
Wanting to walk out of this prison,
Yet held back __
By what …?
Uncertainty ...
The fear of the unknown __
Holds me hostage,
Yet somehow secure in incarceration.
Institutionalised
In my uncomfortable ‘comfort zone’.
To venture out
Is to enter the realms of vulnerability,
A lone figure on the skyline
Of No Man’s Land …
A possible victim of crossfire.
Yet __
An inner longing …
Echoes of a long-lost freedom,
Press me to the threshold
To stand ...
Apprehensive __
Peering with dark-adapted eyes
Half-closed against the light.
Suddenly realizing …
The sun has risen,
Promise of a new today,
A new tomorrow.
Giving me courage to step out,
Into the light.
