The What If task for NaNoWriMo Prep 2024. Speculates on the story of a divine child.
What if a boy learns he is the son of a frog-inspired dragon? His father is the ruler of a massive kingdom, and his mother is an immortal frog dragon. His mother turned into a small frog after she gave birth to the boy and his sister. The boy’s sister doesn’t have a humanoid form. Instead, she is a shape-shifting water dragon. Her form is determined by how much water makes up her form.
The boy and his sister weren’t conceived through conventional means. The frog dragon could’ve simply kissed the ruler while she was in her human form. She then used her magic to conceive the twins through this intimate gesture.
This wasn’t approved by the frog dragon’s family. She seemingly disappeared for all they knew, and her absence affected them greatly. Some believed she was killed and wanted to take revenge on humanity. Others refused to accept this and wandered the land to find her (to no avail).
One other dragon was the twins’ uncle and the frog dragon’s older brother. They were very close, so the frog dragon’s disappearance left him depressed. He wasn’t sure if his sister was dead or alive, so he went to look for her throughout the land. When he finally came across her children, he was conflicted. Why would his sister have children with a mortal man?
The other dragons were dumbfounded when they learned of the twins’ existence. They refused to believe they were separate people from their mother. Could the frog dragon have split into three pieces (frog, dragon, and human)? One of the elder dragons wanted to fuse the three together in order to reassemble the frog dragon.
If the elder dragon got his way, the ritual would result in the frog dragon regaining her true form. However, it would reduce her children into weakened people who would shortly die. The twins certainly don’t want to die. Their mother doesn’t want them to die either. The frog dragon’s brother would be conflicted about the whole thing. He would regain his sister, but at the cost of her happiness.
