Expanded upon the serenity prayer, often used by AA |
God, grant me the serenity Because constant effort is a necessity In order to maintain this level of clarity. This life is an amenity with addiction part of my identity To accept the things I cannot change, even though letting go can feel strange. Because family and friends may at times estrange, I will follow Your Plan with faith in exchange The courage to change the things I can, Including when my sober journey began. What I want right now is less important than what I would like most in my life plan. And the wisdom to know the difference may require some inference, But therein lies the magnificence: Referring to lived experiences and the past tense. Living one day at a time, you may not be fine, just always try to climb. Because to waste a life is the cruelest crime, live your whole life as if in your prime. Enjoying one moment at a time; whether it is listening to distant bells chime, or reading how these words rhyme, the little things in life are the most sublime Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; From every struggle, most of which noone else sees, that we overcome we will retain a piece. Thus, over time our resilience and wisdom increase. Taking, as He did, this sinful world Since a chaotic existence we were hurled. Even as an adult our minds stay swirled, because past conditioning is hard to get unfurled As it is, not as I would have it; So even though life can be a racket, Improving for our children and neighbors we must not quit. Because from this growth we will all benefit. Trusting that He will make all things right Regardless the severity of the plight, Or the measure of fright, or gloom in sight He will bring all problems to the light to our delight If I surrender to His Will; We shall be as intertwined as twill. Even though I may be uneasy still, He will be shining from above like a windowsill So that I may be reasonably happy in this life I don't need to live in excess or rife And while I don't know the length or half-life I will not succumb to the strife. And supremely happy with Him We fill our life to the brim With faith and love in every limb So that one day with Him we can swim. Forever and ever in the next. While this life can leave us perplexed, we must resist habits that leave us hexed I hope you find some peace in this text Amen. |
