A Moment

“Stop looking at me.”

Randel looked away from his sister quickly, “So,” he said, now looking out the window, “how about those Red Socks…”

Jean sighed, “Fine, you can look, but don’t laugh.”

“Why would I laugh?” he said turning around again.

“Because I look ridiculous.”

“You don’t actually, though you certainly don’t look like you usually do…”

“What was she thinking? Why would Mom get something like this for me?”

“It’s actually very pretty...”

“I don’t want pretty.”

“You have no choice, you are pretty, no matter what you wear.”

“What? Why did you say that?”

“It’s just the truth.”

“But you call me Garbage Bag all the time.”

“I’m supposed to, I’m your brother. It’s practically my job.”

“So… I actually look good to you in this dress?”

“Yes, just don’t tell anybody I told you. Why don’t you want to look pretty? I thought all girls did.”

“I want to be taken seriously.”

“You mean brainy seriously?”

“Yes.”

“What makes you think you can’t do both?”

She thought a minute, then, “I don’t know…”

“Well, why don’t you use that brain of yours to find out, and keep the looking good too, and see what happens?”

“How did you get so smart?”

“Apparently, I take after my sister!”

And a lifelong, genuine friendship, was finally born.
