Happiest Day of His Life

         Sam Adams, in thinking back on his long life, often thought the happiest, greatest day of his life was the day that he met his dream girl on a bus in South Korea, in September 1982.

         He had been dreaming of meeting her for almost eight years, ever since he first met her in his dreams in high school. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and she was talking to him in a strange Asian language.

         He asked her,

         “Who are you?”

         And she faded away from the dream, and he fell to the ground in his class much to the amusement of his teachers and his fellow students. That dream incident occurred while he was in the 12th grade at Berkeley High School, in Berkeley, California, in the spring of 1974, a few months before graduation.

         He knew when he first saw her in the dream that he would meet her someday. When he first saw her in the dream, he was bewitched, hypnotized, and mesmerized by the love blazing from her dark brown goo-goo eyes, and he had become her foolish love slave.
He knew it in his bones. She was his soul mate; it was love at first sight for both of them. Love flew from heart-to-heart (ishimchomshim) in Korean. Right then and there, he knew he was fated to meet her someday.

         So for eight years, that image haunted his life. When he had to decide where to go in the Peace Corps, he had another dream. In the dream, when he asked her where you are she said,

         “I am in Korea and I’ll meet you soon”.

         Sam called up the Peace Corps and gave him his decision. He wanted to go to Korea. They said they would make it happen and three months to two months later he was on a plane to South Korea.

         During his time in Korea as a rural healthcare worker in a mountain two hours east of Seoul, he would occasionally go to Seoul for meetings and he often imagined that he had seen the girl in the dream in the distance but he never saw her in person.

         When Sam decided after finishing the Peace Corps that he needed a little bit more time in Korea to improve his Korean, to look for her, he wasn’t quite ready to go back to the States anyway, so he took a job teaching English to Korean soldiers who were working for the US Army in Korea as part of their Korean service obligation.

         About a year later, he decided he was going to give up on his romantic crazy Crest because after all no one believed that he had been dreaming about a girl for eight years and nobody believed that would ever come true so he decided to go to Graduate School at the University of Washington, and was preparing to tell his employer that he was leaving at the end of the month when he had the last of the dreams.

         In this dream, she said,

“          Don’t worry, Aka, I’ll see you soon.”
         
That night, getting off the bus in front of him, was a girl in the dream. He proposed to her three days later and married her two months later.          That date was the beginning of the best 42 years of his life. The day he met his dream girl was truly the happiest day of his life,
