They came for...

A/N- First version was posted in 2018, this poem was inspired by the poem written by Martin Niemöller.

I made it in response to a bill titled H.R. 620 ‘ADA Education And Reform Act Of 2017’ that would have, had it passed, undermined the Americans with Disabilities Act and cause more problems for those with disabilities.

In addition, this poem was created when President #45 was in power, it was a horrifying time to say the least.

First they came for the DACA and the Dreamers, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Dreamer.

Then they came for the Americans with Disabilities Act and the disabled, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not disabled.

Then they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not Muslim.

Then they came for LGBTQ, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not LGBTQ.

Then they came for women’s rights, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a woman.

Then they came for the Black Lives Matter protesters, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a protester.

Then they came for the Journalists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a journalist.

Then they came for the rights of people of color, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a person of color.

Then they came for those opposed to the President, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not opposed to the President.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.
To stand up for me.
To fight for me.

A/N- I hope this poem, along with the original and similar poems written by others, serves as a strong reminder to speak up otherwise sleemo scum would chip away our rights bit by bit until nothing was left.

(Note- for those not in the know, ‘sleemo’ is a word from Star Wars in which basically means one is calling someone a ‘slimeball’.)
