a short poem about survival
Ceiling is Sky

There’s no safe place.
Nowhere to run and hide.
Face the fire.
Face the flame.
Breathe deep and pick a side.

There’s no haven.
Home isn’t home for me.
All sides burning.
Ceiling is sky.
Take the baby and flee.

My mother ran.
Northeast, to run and hide.
Faced the fire.
Faced the flame.
Breathed deep and picked a ride.

She got pulled back.
Shorn off, her wings aflame.
All sides burning.
Ceiling is sky.
Stole her baby away.

There’s no safe place.
Nowhere to close your eyes.
Face the smoke.
Cough and choke.
Breathe deep and pick a high.

Now here I am.
Mine light is gone from me.
All sides burnt.
Ceiling is sky.
Hold the baby is key.

Why still here?
Holding the match in my hand?
Faced the fire.
Faced the flame.
Breathed deep, now I do it again.

There’s no haven.
This house is broken, too.
All sides burning.
Ceiling is sky.
Take my baby with you.
