Spirituality, like love and truth, can be elusive or complicated at times. Or very simple. |
Is the spiritual aspect of 'self' something that is defined by what we find 'outside' of ourselves, or what already exists within? Spirituality ************** Humanity has an insatiable desire to understand. Not just the specific questions we have been asking since we were children like why the sky is blue and why we can’t fly like the birds in the sky above, but the intangibles like why are we here, what is our purpose in life, is there truly some kind of god, and for me especially, why do people do the things they do, both good and bad? How do we determine the differences between the ‘right’ and the ‘wrong’ and can we ever be confident even in our own conclusions? This thing that we call ‘spirituality’ is not something specific, but only the personal investigation into the questions that we create and develop for ourselves. It certainly has an aspect of the world around us, but the ‘focus’ of all of our thoughts and the ‘objective’ of all of our desires and actions, seems to point to understanding our environment, our neighbors, and most importantly, that thing we call ‘self’ that defines us and directs our existence. That ‘essence’ of who and what we truly are. For many, this itch is almost impossible to scratch and is not a fundamental imperative, but for others, it can become an obsession that cannot be denied, no matter the level of frustration and confusion that is a part and parcel of that thing we call life. We all contemplate what it is that we wish to accomplish with this investigation and how determined we are to find the answers to that which we wish to understand. It is a perpetual sojourn into self-discovery and a moral and philosophical evolution. The irony is that it is never the same for any two individuals. It is a journey that ultimately creates the person that we are which is hopefully an individual that we wish to be. There is a certain inevitability about the process. We just have to scratch that itch.
