April Fool

I sat down on my cushioned chair, tooty noises from beneath the cushion, snickers down the hall. I ignored them, acting as if I hadn’t heard a thing. I was safe for the moment, but it was early. Dread, dread. April Fool's day.

I had been so happy to see it was on a Saturday this year, until I realized it was the first Saturday in April, when Frank and I did half day inventory… I got up to get some coffee. Toot toot… apparently, it was a two-way tooter… I pulled it out and dropped it in the trash.

The coffee came out green, more snickers, I pretended to take a sip and walked back to my desk as if everything was fine. I know I’m a spoil sport, but really, tooty chairs and green coffee?

Apparently, he gave up on me. I was free to work for a couple hours with my part of the inventory. I could hear him in his office doing his part, but I know him too well. There would be more.

I finished my part, and brought my papers to the copier. Opening it up there was an envelope with my name on it. I knew exactly who it came from… Thinking it was probably full of confetti or worse, I took it over to the table and opened it slowly. It contained only one piece of paper, a note from Frank. It said, “I know I’m a fool, but I’d like to be your fool. Will you go out with me? I promise to stop the jokes, if only you’ll say yes.”

Apparently, I didn’t know him as well as I thought, but he sure knew me. I did say yes, and ever since that day, I’ve been a happy April fool!
