Trying to see through time
Long walks through a forest preserve is how I spent a lot of my childhood
Sometimes you were with me
Sometimes you weren't
The waterfall being the best place to swim in the summer
And how you would show us how to catch snakes and turtles much to grandma's dismay
My future looked different then...

My time spent there dwindled as a teen
Only to be picked up in times where I had no friends
Which let's be honest was more often than not
I kept to myself devouring books like I needed them to survive
And maybe I did maybe they made it easy to hide
I didn't think about my future then...

I grew up and didn't visit the forest for awhile
You died right before I turned 21 and I never felt more like a child
Now there is where I feel most connected to you
Like we're just playing hide and seek and I can find you in the weeds
There is no future without you...
