"We have a problem." She slid down the downspout and came to a stop beside me.
I looked into her eyes. "Not just one."
Tires screeched behind us.
"Run!", I yelled in her face and sped off, her following behind. We crossed half the city. Panting, we sat down on the ground behind a hedge. We changed our clothes, from black to summer. Then we sat down on a park bench and pretended to be a couple in love. We were good at acting and pretending. Whispering "I love you" even though we and didn't love. Or did we?
I felt my heart leap. I held her hand, no kiss had come yet. I started to kiss and broke off. "I love you. Not just in the play." I could hardly believe it, I had said it! She said, "I love you, too."
Before I knew it, I was in the middle of a kiss.
The tires squealed.
