“Don’t put it there! Nobody will ever find it.” Alice said.

“Isn’t that the point when you’re hiding something?”

“Of course not! We’re only hiding it as part of the game. If it’s too hard they will give up. Then there’s no fun.”

“You think it’s fun watching all the losers lose?”

“Of course not, but if it’s hidden too well, they all feel like losers. If nobody finds it quickly enough, everybody gives up and not in a happy way. They’re all grumpy. You know what it’s like to feel grumpy.”

“Well, if someone finds it quickly, everybody else is grumpy, aren’t they?”

“No, they’re disappointed that they didn’t find it, and win the prize, but it happens so fast they just pop on to the next piece of fun.”

“How do you know this. I’d be disappointed and I wouldn’t pop onto the next thing...”

“You’re older.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“You have experience, you think things through by your prior experiences. You would realize you lost and then feel bad... that kind of stuff.”

“What about them? Wouldn’t they do the same thing?”

“They get over disappointment as soon as they look at something else. Especially cake...”

“Oh. Right, I forgot they’re only three. Was I like that when I was three?
But now! You’re practically grown up! And thank you for helping me with this party! Now go hide that where the first kid who goes by will find it!”

He got a cunning look on his face... “I know just where!”

As she came out of the kitchen she saw it, taped to the front of the TV. Apparently being six is not that much older than three after all. Mom just laughed.
