Are You Ready?

“Are you ready?” Harry asked.

“I just want to get this load of laundry started!” Alice said.

“We’re going to be late!”

“How can we be late for a grocery store?”

“I meant me….” Harry said quickly, “ There’s a show I want to watch later…”

“Oh, we’ll you don’t have to go, I can drive myself to the grocery store for goodness sake!”

“No, I wanted to go…”

“Oh? Well, yes I can do the wash later, let’s go then.”

As they got to Wells Street, Harry drove right by.

“You missed the turn!” Alice said.

“No, I didn’t.”

“What do you mean? The store is on Wells Street.”

“We’re not going to the store…” he said grinning.

“Where are we going?” Alice said, confused.

“It’s a surprise,” Harry said, grinning.

“I don’t like surprises…” Alice said.

“I know. But you’ll like this one.”

“Where are we going?” she asked again… only this time her voice was a bit threatening.

Paranoia started setting in, but Harry continued, “Can’t we even surprise you once?”

“We?…” Alice said, gritting her teeth slightly.

“Just a few friends, your friends, our friends!” he added, as sweat started forming on his neck.

“Pull over!”

Knowing that tone, he pulled over.

“Tell me!”

Defeated and hoping to salvage something, he told her about the surprise party about to happen.

“Take me home.”

“Alice! Your friends will be there!”

“My real friends know that this would be torture for me. You know that too, how could you be part of this?”

“Teresa talked me into it…”

“That figures… bring me home.”

“No! It’s a surprise party!”

“Well,” she said, getting out of the car, “it will certainly be a surprise when you walk in alone! Have fun!” Alice walked home.

And Harry actually did have some fun.
