Flash Fiction
Wonderland

“Excuse me, could you stop?” Alice said, sternly, to the young man sitting about three feet away.

“Excuse me?”

“Stop looking at me!”

“Oh my gosh, I’m sorry, was that what I was doing?”

“This isn’t funny,” Alice said.

“No, I’m sure. I’m not trying to be funny. I was trying to figure out what I was smelling.”

“What! Are you saying I smell now?!”

“Oh, gosh no! I didn’t actually know you were there, you were being very quiet.”

“I don’t understand...” Alice said, confused.

“Oh, I’m sorry! Of course, it seemed odd, you don’t know me! I’m blind.”

Alice looked over at the young man, he had no outward signs of being blind. No squint, or patches, or stick or anything, and beautiful blue eyes. “You can’t see at all?” she asked surprised.

“No, totally blind, since birth actually. My name is James, yours? We ought to have names if we’re going to get personal,” he said, laughing.

“Oh gosh! Alice, my name is Alice. I didn’t realize. How do you get around without a cane even? Or is that too personal?” Alice asked, suddenly embarrassed.

“No, no, I think we are beyond strangers now. I actually have a cane,” he popped out a small stick which popped into a long sturdy cane when he pushed a button.

Alice laughed, “So why were you staring at me?”

“I was smelling something lovely and trying to figure out what it was, do you smell it?”

“No...”

“May I move over toward you?”

“Yes...”

He slid over, then sniffed, then said, “It’s you!”

“I smell?!” Alice said shocked.

“Yes, but wonderful...” he said dreamily. Alice turned bright red. But James didn’t know, he just knew she smelled like Heaven.

And Alice realized she had finally found her Wonderland.
