What Fortune Awaits

I had a dream, no ordinary dream
Of genies, lamps and treasure;
This genie, he was so odd
For genies, he didn't quite measure.

He asked me which I'd prefer,
A wish or a fortune cookie;
But I would have to take care,
for from school I would have to play hooky.

A win for sure, and that's no lie;
Either way was cause for joy.
This genie made my day,
I thought of him as a toy.

"A wish" I declared, would be my prize
I thought I was quite sly;
"I don't want a dumb ol' cookie"
At that the genie began to sigh.

"I want to win the lottery", I said
Much to his chagrin;
He shook his head and waved his hands,
to grant my wish he did begin.

As I leapt for joy, I started to feel
not quite so good,
I gasped a breath, and I fell down,
The genie, over me, he stood.

Should've taken the cookie, was all he said;
in a tone of eerie glee;
For the cookie said "Long life you'll have"
And the winning numbers for the lottery.
