through the dark hallways you never know what might show up |
“Do you hear that?” She stopped. Her eyes narrowed in concentration and Niko and Cato staggered to a halt behind her. A hollow silence echoed around them. Faint noises, their soft, shallow breathing, the gurgle of pipes in the walls, the rustle of wind blowing in through the school from broken windows. The hallway was still deserted. Dark. Cold, faint, gray light shone in from afar. But she could have sworn she heard something. A far off sound. Something like the echo of a distant bang. “Nevermind,” she whispered, glancing back at the others. “Guess I imagined it.” They continued in silence. She didn’t have to remind them not to talk anymore. There was an eerie feeling surrounding them. With every minute, every second the tension mounted. They peered cautiously around corners, they walked carefully through dead hallways with broken lights, past open doors leading into dark, abandoned classrooms. She began to lose hope. Surely- surely if there was anyone still here, they would have seen them by now- And then she heard it. "Guys stop," her voice was a cannon blast in the cold silence. "Did you hear something?" "What's wrong?" She wasn't exactly sure what it was that she heard, she only knew that it was definitely real this time. It was a distant noise, faint, but it sounded as though if it were close it would have been loud. And it came from below them. The basement. |
