Can the Center Hold?

As our nation’s politics,
continues to fracture,
As we continue our descent
into partisan tribal camps,

As more and more people
See political opponents,
As not only not-Americans
But evil creatures
Trying to destroy America
from within,

The focus is shifting
To local town Elections
Across the land.

These used to be low-key,
Low turnout affairs.

No one cared, no one saw
These as key battlegrounds.

But these days,
everything is fracturing
breaking down.

Can the center hold?
Can the country continue
This slide into tribal conflict?

The local elections
Might prove the answer
But I fear that answer
Will not be what I want
To see,
