An unexpected visit from a daughter.
Alone…At Last
WC 206

My daughter, Susan, is visiting; she has been here for a week. I feel guilty saying this, but I am set in my ways and having trouble adjusting. Susan and her siblings left the nest 20 years ago; my dear husband has been gone for five years now. I have become accustomed to being alone.

I poured myself a cup of coffee and was about to enjoy some quiet time when Susan entered the kitchen, talking up a storm about the trauma she is going through.

Susan moved to LA after college, hell-bent on becoming a star. She has finally given up and come back home to Indiana in crisis mode.

“Mom, you are not even listening!”

“Sweetheart, let me finish my coffee, then I will be all ears.”

“I am flying back to LA this morning, so we have to talk now!”

Susan explained that she has been offered a bit part in a movie. Not one to discourage her, I bit my tongue and sent her on the way with a good luck kiss and some homemade muffins.

Alone...at last, I am sitting in my solitude, sipping my coffee. Out of nowhere, a tear runs down my cheek…and then another…and another…and another…
