Charlene meets Steve on a blind date,
Charlene's Blind Date
WC 293

Charlene was on her first blind date in 20 years.

She entered the coffee shop and looked for the man in the Hawaiian shirt. He was sitting near a window looking out toward the street. He was cute.

“Hi, I’m Charlene, you must be Steve.”

“The shirt gave me away, right?”

Steve had a nice smile.

He got up. “Nice to meet you, Charlene.”

“Same here, Steve.”

He pulled her chair out for her.

Five minutes were spent on weather, etc.

Before she left her apartment, Charlene had decided she wouldn’t waste her time with someone not compatible.

“Let’s play twenty questions,” she said.

“Ladies first.”

“What famous person said Lend me your ear?

“Vincent Van Gogh.”

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ear?”

“He did need one.”

“Marc Antony,” Charlene said.

“The singer?”

Charlene glanced at her watch; Steve got out his pen.

“I understand. It’s been a while for me, too, Charlene.”

He scribbled on his napkin.

“I was joking. I studied Shakespeare. I wanted to see if you had a sense of humor.”

“I do, usually,” she said, squirming in her chair.

“Your picture was cute, and I loved your profile. I’m interested in getting to know you.”

He handed her the napkin with his phone number.

“So my question is: if you have any interest, will you call?”

“Yes, if I do, I will.”

Steve took the check and paid the cashier. Charlene didn’t know what to do, so she just sat there.

He came back to the table.

“Thank you for the coffee,” she said.

“My pleasure.” He kissed her hand, turned, and left.

She read what else he wrote: "If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down the shade."

Charlene would not be pulling down this shade. No way!
