Creating Problems

“We have a problem.”

“First of all, You.”

“What?”

“There is no ‘we’ in any sentence including you and me, and a problem.”

“Let me rephrase that. There’s a problem.

Silence.

“So are you gonna tell me what it is?”

“We’re locked in.”

“How did that happen!”

“That rock you just threw was holding the door open for a reason.”

“What reason?”

“Automatic lock.”

“Why didn’t you tell me!”

“Because it never occurred to me you would pick up an old rock holding a door open and throw it for no reason.”

“There was a reason!”

“What was it?

“I thought I saw a mouse.”

“Did you?”

“I don’t know, the door shut too quick.”

A bell rang.

“Crap, now we’re gonna be late for English class and we still haven’t found Mrs. Gold’s holiday boxes. Not only that, she won’t be looking for us, and our next class is inter-mural sports where they won’t take attendance, we could be stuck in here for a long time!”

“Well, nothing else to do, let’s have lunch early.”

“What? We can’t eat in here!”

“Listen, goodie two shoes, Mrs. Gold sent us to find her boxes. We got locked in…”

“Your fault!”

“They don’t need to know that. They will eventually come looking for us and find poor us, locked in a storage closet for hours trying to do a favor for a teacher! They will give us food and drinks and probably extra recess, anything to make us happy and not get them in trouble with our parents! We get to miss English class and we’ll be treated like kings!”

“You are one evil person aren’t you,” Jeff said.

“l call it smart,” Rex answered, grinning.

“And I call it something else,” said Principal Phillips, from the doorway. “Let’s go boys.”
