If Wishes were Fishes “When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you” chanted Billy. “I know that song. It’s from that cartoon. You know. That one, um, the one where the guy turns into a puppet.” “Nah, it’s from a book. It’s a nursery rhyme. You say it when you see the first star at night,” Billy said with assurance. “You’re both wrong. It was written on a Cracker Jack prize. I got it once with a ring.” The three boys argued for a time; argued the origin of the song like it was the most important trivia question on a game show. Suddenly the melody came into the treehouse. The chums ran to the railing. Sitting on the ground was a small figure. It looked like a puppet. “Hey boys! Come down here. I need your help.” The little figure called to the three boys. Billy, John, and Charlie glanced sideways at each other. “What do we do?” asked Charlie. “Where’d he come from?” questioned Billy. “It’s magic. You said that song, he appeared. He’s a ghost.” John stated with all the assurance a ten-year-old could muster. All three said in unison, “OOOHHH.” “Are you going to come down from there, give me help?” cried the little puppet. The boys scampered down the treehouse steps. “What can we do to help?” “I’m lost. Written on my back is my address.” John read the note. “59 Main Street. I know where that is. We can take you there.” “Wonderful. Now, what do you desire? I can give you anything your heart desires.” The three thoughtfully discussed this for a moment. “We’ve decided we’d like to fly. Like the birds.” “Wish granted. Let’s fly, boys.” W/C 298 |
