Live target in the crowd,
shrinking from the light,
eyes fixed on the ground,
the better not to catch
the hunter’s narrowed gaze,
you slip through the gap
between faceless forms,
no creature of the herd
but camouflaged by numbers,
striding ever onwards,
safety in the destination,
the door closed and locked,
dark cloak of loneliness
assumed once again,
respite for the brief moment
from the secrets of others.
