I love these sort of markets. Farmers sell produce that was in the field only yesterday. Crafters with everything from artworks to baby cardigans, travellers with their brightly painted pots and jugs and flower sellers galore. Among all the stalls I spied a little old gypsy woman. Her glass ball reflected the bright sunlight. Her wares ranged from bunches of heather to homemade pegs. "Tell yer fortune, lady?" I shook my head. I prefer not to see my future; I like surprises. "Lucky heather?" With my hay fever? "Lucky rabbit's foot?" She wasn't taking no for an answer. The rabbit's foot key ring was pressed into my hand. The foot was very real. I passed over the money and headed home. I let myself in with the key that was now firmly attached to the ring. Kettle on, I settled in my favourite armchair by the window. I watched as bees flitted from flower to flower. It wasn't long before the warmth of the sun lulled me to sleep. THUD! THUD! THUD! It came from the front door. THUD! THUD! THUD! Who or what ever was at the door wasn't going away any time soon. I looked through the peephole. A big, round, brown eye stared back at me. Was that fur? I put the chain on and opened the door a crack. A giant foot kicked out from under a fluffy white ball. The chain gave way and the door flew open. The most enormous white rabbit charged in, a chain saw in his hand. "Yo Momma." He picked up the key ring and held it close to my face. "She was family, d'ya hear." He turned away and the next thing I saw was this giant paw heading for my face. It made contact and when the lights came back on I was right across the room. The big white tail was in my eyes as he sat astride me. I heard the chainsaw, I felt the blade slicing through me ankle, I saw the blood spurting over the floor and walls. As I recovered in hospital there was a TV News report. A giant gangsta rabbit had been spotted with a human foot hanging from a gold chain around his neck and another with gold letters that spelled out REVENGE. 383 words |
