A poem based off the song “Ocean Eyes” by Billie Ellish
Flipped Switch

Pools of cerulean
stared back at me
as the smirk on
your pink, full lips
widened in triumph.

It only happened
because I had turned
and rolled my forest like
eyes when you shushed
us, though the mirth was clear.

Teasing you was something
I had never quite known how
to do before that day. You were
never someone who seemed to
like my company, much less my jokes.

I wonder now, as the memory tumbles
around in my thoughts, how are you doing.
Are you okay, my friend? Has your mind
forgotten me already? Or do you, as I have,
recall that day when your ocean eyes met mine?
