A contest entry for the Why? Why not? contest |
5) Why, if Xmas is so successful, does it come only once a year? Why does Christmas only come once per year? I can think of a lot of good reasons why. First there is the historic reason. Christmas is a holiday adopted by the church fathers in the early days of Christianity. The pagans had a major feast every winter solstice. When the pagans became Christians they wanted to convert back to paganism to keep the feast. The church adopted their holiday and gave it a Christian name and purpose. That is the historic reason it only comes once a year. On the other hand, why should the church not adopt a holiday and celebrate the Savior's birth? There is also a practical reason. Christmas is expensive! Many people can't afford to celebrate it once per year so they definitely don't want to celebrate it more than once a year. Many people spend more money at Christmas than any other time of year. On the other hand, why should stores not get rich this one time per year? My primary reason is that people are such phoneys during Christmas. They will wish you a "merry Christmas" while taking away your very means to have a merry Christmas. Again though I have to ask, why should they not be insincere at Christmas? They are probably being their true selves! |
