My reasons and arguments for remaining Catholic despite all the scandal.
Today, the Catholic Church is going through one of the greatest crises of its history. People's faith in the Church is unsteady and I cannot blame them. This scandal in the church has me livid. I want things to change. I want people responsible to be served justice. I however, am standing by the Pope, my bishops, my priests, and the Catholic Church. I am not giving up on the only Church with Apostolic succession. I am standing tall with my rosary in my hand. I am proclaiming my Catholic faith to everyone. I will not back down. And here’s why:
The most basic reason is that humans are human and we make mistakes and are susceptible to sin. The church is made up of humans not. And like you and me, they are sinners. Sin is sin in God’s eye. Yes, the sins made by some of the church leaders are horrific. Jesus said, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” (Jn 8:7) No one is perfect and we are not the judges of those who sin for we are all sinners in one way or another. I know I could write a book about all the sins I have committed in my life. Each and everyone one of them has
Is this not the church of forgiveness? is it not written: 'Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but I tell you, seventy-seven times.' (Mt 18:21–22)? We are taught to love and forgive EVERYONE. Even in the Lord’s Prayer it says “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” We cannot receive full grace and forgiveness unless we forgive the sins of others. I am not saying that we should forget their sins. These priests have done some horrific things, but everyone deserves forgiveness. They should be removed from all ministry and away from people they can hurt again.
The Catholic Church is the only church with Apostolic Succession. Jesus laid his hands and breathed on the Apostles and gave them the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:18). The Apostles then passed on the Holy Spirit to their disciples and so on and so on until we get to the priest of today. I am not about to abandon and denounce the men whose authority comes from Jesus through the ages. I am going to stand by them as we change the Church for the better.
So, what now? Faithful Catholics need to stand and fight. We need to band together and demand positive and realistic changes for the chruch that align with our traditions and teachings. Allowing priests to marry is not going to happen nor will it fix the problems. Just ask the Baptists. It's coming to light that they have the same issue with their preachers. We need to remain in the Church and be the positive example for new generations. We do not back down from strife. We do not bend to the will of the world. What would have happened if Lincoln had backed down when the south seceded from the union? Or if Martin Luther King Jr, backed down when people put burning crosses on his yard? This is the time for Catholic heroes. We need to stand up against the Catholic hate and tell the world that we are not all the same. That there are some amazing and holy people within this church.
These are just a few reasons why I want to stay with the Catholic Church. It is a wonderful Chruch that does so much charity work. They have some of the biggest charities in the world and have helped literally millions of families around the world. The Church has fought for the weak and oppressed for 2 millennia. I will remain Catholic.
