Most voices raised in traditional song. Fur wrapped matron, holding her light straight-armed, two-fingered, pinky out as if she had a cup of tea she didn't want spilled on snowy mink. Over-tired children walk slowly towards home. Stage whisper from Madam Mink: Your children really should be wearing their best clothes, it's Christmas Eve, after all. I am silenced. Caught between transcendent moment and petty snoot. Never at a loss for words, I couldn't find a single one. I didn't need to: my children did. Eldest looks down at her favorite dress, mutters something about Scrooge. Middle child rubs finger between neck and tie, grumbles about Grinches. Youngest child finishes discussion, saying she needs to write a note to Santa before bed. I need to ask him to give that mean lady a heart. |
