An unexpected moment can change the course of life.
"Everything Is Different Now"

A short walk from the dorm
to a sculpture lab,
stepping through vapors of steam
rising from sidewalks
after an early morning rain shower;
expected humidity for mid-September
in the Deep South.
At its late Summer's best,
sultry and mysterious scenarios
prevailed on this particular day.

My first semester class;
not yet aware what waited for me,
what would change my life
in ways I never expected.
Eager, yet apprehensive feelings
ensued; an apparent paradox
stymied me. Exhilarating at least.
The mist, an outdoor sauna, seemed
to forecast an ethereal experience.

The studio door was opened
to a myriad of new faces.
A chatter of salutations and questions
bounced around and against walls
inside a large metal building.
Fresh fragrances from stacks
of newly cut wood, bags of clay,
and plaster of paris permeated.
Finding a path through
the bustle of busy newcomers,
he stepped aside from the crowd.
Our eyes met.
