How many the ways love slips into our lives –
In wildflowers gathered by daughters and sons,
in quick morning kisses from husbands and wives
and hugs of support - be it strikes or home runs.
In aid from a neighbor when flood waters rise,
warm soup when you’re sick and on Thanksgiving plates.
In comfort from strangers when guns traumatize
and tears of compassion when death devastates.
It nestles in laughter that tickles your heart
and blooms in the rays of enthused accolades.
It hides in the teasing your siblings impart
and lingers in echoes of past serenades.
But love’s more than fortune, and sometimes it hurts
like biting your tongue when you know that you’re right,
allowing a child to be served just desserts
or standing your ground when you’d rather take flight.
Unbridled and vast…love has many a face;
some batter your heart - some you ache to embrace.
