Welch
Mrs. Merab Beach Welch, daughter of Dr. Bildad and Hannah Cassette Beach, was born in Marcellus May 6, 1820, and died at the residence of her son in Douglaston, Long Island on May 15, 1912.
Her early life was spent in the village of Marcellus, and one of her first recollections was of LaFayette's visit to this place in 1824, and of her reciting a poem for him. She was probably the last person who remembered this event.
In early womanhood she married Col. Warner H. Welch, who died in 1873. Of the six children who were born to them but one survives, a son, Carlton S.
Mrs. Welch was one of the charter members of the Unitarian church in Ithaca, so it seemed especially fitting that her funeral services should be held there, last Friday with burial in the family lot in that city.
She was a woman of strong personal ability, and her indomitable will throughout her long life enabled her to overcome obstacles which would have been unsurmountable to a person of less strength of character.
The BEACH FAMILY MAGAZINE, Vol. II, No. 1, p. 126, omit s h i m from the list of children of Bildad Beach, but at Vol. III, No. 2, p. 25 7 , p resents him in his proper place. His parentage is established by the wi l l o f his father, published in Vol. II, No. 1, pp. 130-131. His own will , dated 27-Jan-1890 and probated 18-Jul-1890, is likewise published at p. 131.
