Aging rancher or horseman reflects
I'm an old cowboy
But my cowboy days are done.
Once I was tall in the saddle,
Now all my trails have been run.

I'm stooped, I'm wrinkled, I'm sagging.
I still get around, but I'm slow.
The women don't give me notice,
So I keep my gaze down low.

But inside my heart burns a fire,
That infirmity can't extinguish.
My soul kindles the embers
Of dreams I will not relinquish.

I remember well the days of my youth,
Campfires, mountains, and horses,
Pretty girls, parties, and dances,
Good jobs, bad jobs all ran their courses.

I'm an old cowboy
With a hat to hide my thin hair.
I've only memories to love me.
I'm not going anywhere.
