The insidious nature of advertising. An Open Expressions Entry |
Watch This Space The ghostly fingers of each Ad reach out to slowly drive you mad with images that harshly play and messages that seem to say, “Without me, there is no debate, your life is only second rate!” “We need to win their hearts and souls,” the politicians chant like trolls but secretly they spend their cash to make opponents look like trash. They’ve learned that advertising’s great; you never have to tell it straight. Their promises all seem persuasive but to me they’re all abrasive and, in the end, it takes its toll – we’ve commercialized the SuperBowl. We talk about which ad was funny ignoring that it's just for money. On T.V., phones, and internet they push their wares, lest we forget. They line the highways with their signs. Their messages entwine like vines that crowd the views of our landscape – it seems that there is no escape. My greatest fear is they'll attend my funeral and, at the end, they’ll rent the space inside my casket: I'll get eternity in a wastebasket!
