Coffee Grounds

She opened the gift to find coffee grounds inside.
"Is this the type of gift you give a to-be bride?"
She wondered aloud to the empty room
But it was too funny, she didn't give way to gloom.

"They want coffee, coffee they shall receive,"
She strode to the kitchen, her fiance did perceive
The determined tilt of her cute little chin
And he felt some nervousness within.

Quickly, he tiptoed to the kitchen where she
Was brewing the meanest little cup of coffee.
Who was it meant for? He must warn the recipient
That 'pretending' to sip it is what would be prudent.

When the guests arrived, he saw to his dismay
That the blue mug hadn't been put on the tray.
it was carefully separated from the others,
And meant for the youngest of her brothers.

She was there, she was looking (in fact, she was glaring)
He couldn't signal a warning while she was staring.
Her brother took the blue mug -- oh, poor chap
He has taken a sip! Oh shoot, oh crap!

He sweated while he watched his to be in-law drink
What his fate would be, he didn't want to think.
But then the guy smiled -- and gave him a wink
"Don't worry," brother mouthed. "Ain't no stink."

They'd grown up with each other, brother knew her ways
She had been up to pranks through their childhood days.
He wasn't really drinking, he was just miming
And, when she turned her back, with perfect timing

He threw the coffee in the flower vase and turned around
Replied, "nothing" when she asked "what was that sound?"
Sister rolled up her eyes, "You threw the coffee away!"
"Well, you'd put something horrible in it today!"

They laughed together, the whole family
"It was just something spicy, to make it chilli!"
Fiance asked his in-law to be for some tips
To manage his bride when she pursed her lips.

"Oh, she's the greatest joker, my big sister
Don't get on her wrong side, understand, mister?"
Yes, he did and he vowed ever to be good
Isn't that just what a good bridegroom should?
