A short description of what materials are for kids! #2 in my what is series.
Everything around us made out of materials . A material is something that can be used to create another thing.
Some materials are leather (which comes from animal skin.), glass (which is made from heating sand, limestone, soda ash, and is shaped well hot.) wood (which is made from trees and is good for making furniture.), plastic (which is used for things like water bottles.), wool (which comes from sheep fur sheered off by a sheerer.), clay (a type of soil dug from the ground and usually used for pottery.), and metal (a rock mined from the ground used for things like machines and electronics.).
Some materials can be magnetic. Something is magnetic is when a magnet can stick to it. Some metals that are magnetic can be iron or nickel. Some that aren't magnetic could be copper or gold.
Try doing a little experiment . Take a magnet and try to stick it to the fridge, a piece of foil, a sauce pan, a nail, and a paperclip. Which did you find that worked? Which did you find that didn't?
Materials can change depending on their temperature. When water is frozen it turns into ice, a solid. A solid can be held, it has a set shape and volume. Ice can melt into water, a liquid. A liquid takes the shape of its container, it has no set shape but it does have a set volume. Water can heat up into steam, a gas. A gas moves freely to fit its surroundings. It has no set shape or volume.
Some materials can be mixed together to create a different material. For example if you were to mix cement, sand, and water it would make a substance called mortar. Mortar is a paste used to stick bricks together!
Here is another experiment ! To make this bubbly potion you will need to half fill a plastic cup with clear vinniger. Add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda or baking soda, now watch it bubble!
